Solar Battery Installation Sydney: What to Expect Before, During and After
Planning to get a solar battery installation? You have come to the right place.
But if you’re like most Sydney homeowners, the next question is: what actually happens now? What do they check, how long does it take, and what should you do once the system is on?
This guide breaks down the entire solar battery installation process, from site assessment to first bill.
Before Solar Installation: Site Assessment and System Sizing
Installation starts before. The site assessment includes several technical tests to determine whether your home is ready for installation and which battery system best suits it. It takes 45 to 90 minutes.
What the assessment covers
Existing solar system check: The installer will assess your existing inverter type (string, hybrid, or microinverter), age, and output capacity, and whether it can communicate with a battery.
Not all existing inverters are battery-compatible; some may need to be replaced or paired with a battery inverter. If you’re unsure whether your current inverter is holding you back, our guide to solar inverter upgrades explains the key signs.
Switchboard and electrical capacity: Your switchboard must support the additional load and comply with AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards.
Many older Sydney homes with switchboards from the 1990s or earlier will need an upgrade before you can safely connect a battery.
Battery placement: The location of the battery must meet minimum clearance requirements – typically 500 mm clearance around the unit – and stay within the operating temperature range. LiFePO4 batteries (used in most quality systems like Neovolt and Fox ESS) operate safely between 0°C and 50°C, making them suitable for Sydney’s climate.
Usable capacity sizing: Battery sizing is based on your daily consumption pattern, not just your total usage.
For an average Sydney household using 20–25 kWh per day, a battery in the 10–13.5 kWh usable capacity range is typically recommended. Smaller households or those wanting blackout protection may find a 6–8 kWh system sufficient. For a full breakdown of sizing, read What Size Solar Battery Do I Need for My House?
Approvals and paperwork
In NSW, solar battery installations require a Distributed Network Service Provider (DNSP) application to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, depending on your suburb, which is handled by your installer within 5— 10 business days.
You will also receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) from the licensed electrician completing the work — keep this for warranty and insurance purposes.
During Solar Installation Day
A standard residential solar battery installation takes about 4-8 hours. More complex installations – those requiring a switchboard upgrade, inverter replacement, or multiple battery units – may span two days.
The installation sequence:
Checks | Time Taken | Process |
Isolation and safety checks | 30–60 minutes | The installer isolates the mains supply and your existing solar system beforehand. |
Mounting the battery unit | 30–60 minutes | The battery enclosure is wall-mounted using manufacturer-specified brackets. Weight changes depending on the battery type. Walls must be structurally sound and the mounting hardware rated for the load. |
Inverter and wiring installation | 2–3 hours | The hybrid inverter manages DC power flow between your solar panels, battery, and the grid — replacing or supplementing your existing string inverter. |
Switchboard work | 1–2 hours | A dedicated battery circuit is added, and an emergency isolation switch is fitted in compliance with NSW Fair Trading requirements for battery energy storage systems (BESS).
|
Commissioning and CT clamp setup | 30–60 minutes | The system is powered up and connected to the monitoring platform. A current transformer (CT) clamp is fitted around your main feed cable, allowing the battery management system (BMS) to read real-time consumption and manage charging accordingly.

After Solar Installation: What to Check and Monitor
Once your system is live, verify several things in the first days and weeks.
1. Check your monitoring app
Every major battery brand comes with a companion monitoring app. Within 24–48 hours of installation, check:
- State of charge (SoC): Is the battery charging from solar during the day and discharging in the evening?
- Self-consumption rate: Aim for 80–95% of your solar generation being consumed by your home or stored in the battery, rather than exported to the grid.
- Grid import: Your grid import during peak periods (3 PM–9 PM in NSW, when rates are highest) should drop significantly once the battery is operational.
2. Understand your feed-in tariff position
Most Sydney homeowners should shift to a time-of-use (TOU) electricity tariff if they aren’t already on one.
Under a TOU structure, you charge your battery from solar during off-peak periods and draw from it during peak periods — rather than buying peak-rate grid electricity.
This is where the majority of your bill savings come from. For a full savings breakdown, see How Much Can Sydney Families Save with a Solar Battery?
3. Configure your backup settings
Most modern battery systems offer a backup reserve setting – a minimum SoC the battery maintains in case of a grid outage. A 20–30% reserve is standard for most households. If you have medical equipment or other critical loads, a higher reserve (50%+) may be worth setting.

Warranty registration and service
Register your battery warranty with the manufacturer within 30 days of installation.
Most systems Battery Deals installs carry a 10-year warranty covering the battery cells and inverter. Store your CCEW, DNSP approval, and warranty certificate together.
Battery systems in NSW should be inspected by a CEC-accredited installer every 2–3 years — covered for Battery Deals customers under our After Care program.
